2 Lemons a Day, Keeps Digestive Issues, Cancer and Heart Diseases Away !!

Lemon has a number of health benefits. It is a storehouse of Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, folate, niacin, thiamine, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, copper, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, phosphorous and protein. It helps prevent digestive issues, cancer, heart diseases, diabetes, kidney stones, scurvy, etc. The most noteworthy amongst these have been discussed below:
 
1. Resolves Digestive Issues – Lemons contain ascorbic acid which play a key role in healing and protection of the gastric mucosa from injury due to gastritis, peptic ulcer disease and its complications. The lemon peel contains D-Limonene which helps in relieving heart burn and stomach reflux. The juice of the lemon stimulates bile flow, thereby enhancing digestion. It also acts as a blood purifier and cleansing agent. Drinking fresh lemon soda after a heavy lunch or dinner helps in quick digestion. Daily intake of lemon helps to keep away diarrhoea, abdominal bloating, excessive gas and abdominal cramps.

 

2. Combats Cancer – Lemons contain flavonoids. Flavonoids have anti-cancer and anti-oxidant properties. Flavonoids significantly influence the immunological processes associated with the development and progression of cancer. Flavonoids are potent in modulating events in cancer such as formation of new blood vessels, cell differentiation, cell proliferation, cell death, etc. According to a research published in PubMed, a flavonoid isolated from lemon named Eriocitrin, inhibits the proliferation of human hepatocellular carcinoma cells through inducing cell death and arresting cell cycle. Similarly, plant compounds present in lemon like hesperidin and d-limonene may help reduce the risk of many other types of cancers, including breast cancer.

 

3. Prevents Heart Diseases – Lemon juice benefits people suffering from high blood pressure and other heart problems. This is because lemon juice contains potassium, which relaxes the walls of the blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. It also helps control nausea and dizziness alongside providing a calming effect to the mind and body. A research published in Stroke journal shows that Vitamin C reduces the risk of heart ailments & stroke. Flavanones, a compound present in lemons help in fighting off free radicals that cause cell damage i.e. oxidative stress, thereby reducing the chances of cardiovascular diseases. Hesperidin, a type of flavanone present in lemon peels produces cardio-protective effects. Studies conducted on experimental rats reveal that the plant compounds hesperidin and diosmin present in lemon have beneficial effects on key risk factors for heart disease. This is due to the potent lipid-lowering properties and their role in preventing atherosclerosis.
 
Therefore, practice consuming two lemons a day in whichever manner you wish to. Some people are intolerant to lemons, they can start building the habit by taking 1 lemon a day. Divide your intake by taking 1/2 a lemon twice a day. Try this for 20 days and see the marvellous changes in your health. Inculcate this habit in your daily routine and continue this practise to lead a healthy life.
