Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airways that carry air in and out from lungs. In this condition airways get narrowed, swollen or inflamed due to some external causes. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. People suffering from Asthma usually experience these symptoms most frequently during the night and early morning. There are times when the condition turns acute and symptoms are worse than usual. This is known as an 'Asthma episode' or an 'Asthma attack'. Sometimes, the airways may get blocked to such an extent that oxygen fails to enter the lungs. This leads to a lack of oxygen in the body and the vital organs get starved of oxygen. Such attacks can be fatal and may require urgent hospitalisation. 
Exposure to various substances that trigger allergies (allergens) and irritants can set off symptoms of Asthma. Such triggers vary from person to person and can include a wide range of substances. These include airborne particles, pollutants, respiratory infections, physical activity, sudden fluctuations in temperature, certain medications, strong emotions, stress, some types of preservatives added to foods and beverages, Gastroesophageal reflux disease, even menstrual cycle in some women. Family history is also a strong risk factor. Asthma is often combined with other ‘atopic’ or allergic diseases like Eczema, Urticaria, Allergic Rhinitis and Hay fever.
