Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils, most commonly caused by viral or bacterial infection. Tonsils are two masses of tissue located at the back of the throat. They act as filters, trapping germs that could otherwise enter our airway and cause infection. They also produce antibodies to fight infection. But sometimes the tonsils themselves become infected. Overwhelmed by bacteria or viruses, they swell and become inflamed. This condition is known as Tonsillitis. It is especially common in children and can recur frequently. Therefore we need to be aware of the problem and its natural solution.
The main symptoms of Tonsillitis are inflammation and swelling of the tonsils, sometimes severe enough to block the airways. Other symptoms include: throat pain or tenderness, redness of the tonsils, a white or yellow coating on the tonsils, painful blisters or ulcers on the throat, hoarseness or loss of voice, headache, loss of appetite, earache, difficulty in swallowing or breathing through the mouth, swollen glands in the neck or jaw area, fever, chills and bad breath. In children, symptoms may also include nausea and abdominal pain. In cases of Acute Tonsillitis, the surface of the tonsil may be bright red and with visible white areas or streaks of pus.
The most common cause of Tonsillitis is viral infection – which includes Adenovirus, Rhinovirus, Influenza, Coronavirus and Respiratory Syncytial virus. It can also be caused by Epstein-Barr virus, Herpes simplex virus, Cytomegalovirus or HIV. The second most common cause is bacterial infection of which the predominant is the Streptococcus, which is responsible for strep throat. Overuse of expensive medicines to prevent this problem can lead to serious side effects.
